Clogher, Tyrone, Ireland

1056. Clogher

Clogher was the fifth-century seat of the diocese of Clogher, the oldest bishopric in Ireland, and gives its names to two dioceses, Protestant and Catholic. The diocese corresponds roughly with Fermanagh, south Tyrone, and County Monaghan in the Republic. The first bishop here was St MacCartan (died 506), a disciple of St Patrick. In medieval times there were endless power struggles between the bishops of Clogher and the vicars general of the deanery of Lough Erne. Pope Sixtus IV made several appointments to the see but the bishop was rarely able to take possession. When the Blessed Oliver Plunket, primate of Armagh, visited Clogher in 1671 he inspected the old diocesan register which catalogued all the bishops. These included Bishop Eoghan (died 1515) who lost a finger on his left hand 'in defence of his church'. the first Protestant bishop, Myler MacGrath, was appointed in 1570.

1057. Coalisland

Coaslisland where brick making is a local industry, is disfigured by large scale sand, gravel and clay extraction and the detritus of old coal mines. Industrial archaeologists enthuse about the beehive kilns, old brickworks chimney and the derelict canal basin. The town was briefly the inland port for the coalfields.

Cookstown, Tyrone, Ireland

1058. Cookstown

The main street in Cookstown is perfectly straight. 1 1/4 miles long with a hump in the middle, and 130ft wide. It was part of an ambitious town plan by William Stewart of Killymoon, an eighteenth-century Tyrone landlord. However, neither he nor his descendants ever got round to developing the town beyond this remarkable central avenue. Its great advantage, from the visitor's point of view, is convenient parking. The life and bustle of Cookstown, at the centre of good farming country, focuses wholly on the main street which, for some reason, has changed its name no fewer than eight times.
