1075. Strabane
The border town of Strabane looks north-west across the Foyle to Lifford, a mile downstream in County Donegal. James II made his base here in 1688-9 for the attack on Londonderry. Unlikely though it seems now, Strabane was an important printing and book publishing centre in the eighteenth century. The only relic of that humanistic tradition is a little shop with a Georgian front in Main Street - Gray's Printing Shop, rescued by the National Trust.
